Mary Lindsay

Mary Lindsay, 94, of Rockford, Illinois formerly of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the home of her daughter.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline.  There is no visitation.  Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.

Following the service a luncheon will be held in the Fellowship Hall at St. James beginning at 2:30 p.m.  Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or to the Churches United Food Pantry.

Mary Nelson was born June 3, 1915, in Rock Island, a daughter of Julius and Augusta Peterson Nelson. She married Kenneth Johnson and later married James Lindsay on Oct. 14, 1949, in Peoria, Illinois.  He died in 1976.  She worked at the former Gibberman Brothers, where she met her friend of more than 70 years, Mary Duytschaver. She also worked at Miller Container Corp., Strombeck & Becker Mfg. Co. and Lundia-Myers.

Mary was a long-time member of St. James, joining in the early 50's when the congregation was meeting at Eugene Field School.  She was also a member of the Plus 60 Club and AARP.  Mary enjoyed church music, country music, gardening, flowers and especially loved her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children (and spouses), Diana Cumpton, Dubuque, Iowa, Daniel (Cathey) Johnson, Sherrard, and Annette (Timothy) Lynch, Rockford; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lillie Heath, Taylor Ridge.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James; son, Gary Lindsay; and brothers, Ebbie, Gunner, Henry, Carl, John, Ernest and Harry Nelson.
