Local Outreach

Adopt a Highway

In October, 1996, St. James assumed the responsibility of cleaning up a 0.8-mile stretch of 14th Street West in south Rock Island. This activity occurs four times a year. It usually takes about an hour to do the job. The four dates that we plan to pick up trash in 2021 are

   2:00 pm, Fri., May 7
   8:45 am, Sat., Jul. 17
   8:45 pm, Sat., Sep. 11
   2:00 pm, Thu., Nov. 4

If you would like to join in the fun and help beautify this well-traveled street, meet at the eastern parking lot of Mel McKay park in South Rock Island. At the park we receive instructions, put on a safety vest, grab a trash bag and pick up a grabber. Please wear sturdy shoes. Safety vests, gloves, garbage bags, grabbers, and garbage bag holders will be provided.

Hunger Education, Advocacy and Response Team (HEART)

Members of the HEART serve four suppers each year at Christian Care in Rock Island. They also organize weekly donations of food items to a nearby food pantry.  New HEART members are always welcome!
